The common route is to submit a book proposal to the book publishers, this will give the publishers an idea of what your book is about.  It may also be worth putting together a list of some authors that are of a similar genre to yourself, whilst pointing out any difference between yours and others work.  An agent can also assist you further in getting your work looked at by book publishers.  Getting an agent may be an easy or impossible task, it all really depends on your project.  You may know someone in the trade already, but persistence is the key.

Once you have located an agent this will give you the opportunity to absorb some of their industry knowledge and redraft your proposal accordingly.  This can help influence the book publishers to take on your book idea.  If all has gone well so far you should now be ready to go to market with your completed proposal.  Your agent will be forwarding your proposal to quite a few publishers, and by volume of numbers you should get some interest back.  If you have more than one interested party, it’s then a game of numbers.

Book publishers in general will offer you an advance, so it would make sense to accept the one that offers the largest advance.  And remember, it is only an advance on royalties, if your book is good enough there is no reason why you shouldn’t be seeing funds roll in some time later.  Book publishers offering the biggest advance can also give you an indication of how excited they are by your book idea and how well they expect it to do.  Don’t be disheartened if you get a no or even a few no’s, someone will pick it up eventually.

My husband and I tried for a very long time to have a child and were finally able to do so a few years ago.
